“Dancing shows me what my body can do…. I have found a place in my body where I feel like I’m my authentic self and I’m not embarrassed to let her be seen.”
In my previous blog post, I talked about my new project: ‘Why We Move!” This is a series of interviews with health first fitness pros who believe in finding the joy in movement and setting NON-appearance based goals.
We have a treat for you today! The ‘Misfit’ behind Missfits😉 , Becky Scott runs a dance inspired fitness class for those who don’t feel at home in the gym.
Becky agreed to take part in my “Why We Move’ series and I couldn’t be happier. Her energy is infectious and the pure joy Becky finds in moving her body is clear!
(You can find Becky @missfitsworkout 💜and the full interview in bio.)
Q.1 What do you define as ‘joyful movement’?
“For me it’s any movement that makes me feel good! ..A walk to the shops could be joyful, or (for me at least) dancing in my kitchen or anywhere really! “
Q.2 What is your earliest memory of moving for fun and pure joy?
“Honestly? I don’t remember moving for joy until about 5 years ago! I’m 38 now. From the age of 8 until my mid thirties I only exercised as a means to change (shrink) my body. …I remember finding a Zumba class in my mid thirties (starting it with the aim to shrink my body, obviously!) but moving my body to the music gave me so much joy that I wanted to do because of how it made me feel – which was a fabulous revelation.”
Q.3 Do you feel you listen to your body re movement or do you follow a specific schedule? .
“I listen to my body to a point ….I do adapt moves if I’m feeling tired or my knee hurts. I would have just powered through, not that long ago! In terms of exercise for me – I do what I fancy, when I can. I don’t keep a rigid schedule.”
Q.4 If exercise had ZERO impact on how your body looks, would your exercise choices be different?
“For me, exercise has very little impact on how my body looks from the outside, but it feels very different from the inside! My exercise choices have changed now that I’m not trying to change my appearance – it’s primarily dance based, has lots of stretches and an awesome sound track /play list!
Q.5 Why do you move? (What motivates you and how does movement make you feel?)“I move because it makes me feel good! In my body and my mind.”
Thanks so much Becky and keep dancing!
