Do what you love and what loves you back…..

Why We Move is back with episode 14! I am so honoured to welcome Fiona Whitfield to our merry crew of fitness professionals whose focus is joyful movement and health rather than aesthetic gain and weight loss.

“I say to my clients, do what you love  or what loves you back!”

I met Fiona about 2 years ago before my first “Embrace- The Documentary” (@bodyimagemovement) screening with the lovely @seascapeblue.

Fiona is a women’s wellness coach who in her own words helps women ditch the craziness of dieting and feeling rubbish. She empowers women to tune in and really listen to their bodies.
She is so wonderfully warm, personable and a breath of fresh air in the wellness industry.

Q.1 What do you define as ‘joyful movement’?

Anything which makes me smile!!  Generally unrestricted, non choreographed (but not always, I do like me a bit of Zumba), mostly with LOUD music and lately anything in the sea – with loud whoops and cheers as I go!

Q.2 What is your earliest memory of moving for fun and pure joy?

I used to do Latin and Ballroom dancing when I was about 9 – I loved it!  It was such a relief to enjoy moving after doing gym at school and just not getting on with it…And let’s not talk about cross country.  I used to think I wasn’t sporty, but then I discovered aerobics and was hooked.

Q.3 Do you feel you listen to your body as far as movement is concerned or do you follow a specific programme or schedule?

I do a mix of both really, but all led by what my body says!  Which wasn’t always the case.  I used to just follow the crowd or the latest thing.  Now I know my body likes to move and get sweaty sometimes, to walk slowly and gently at others, and to move in a more considered way.  I pretty much end up teaching what I like to do!

Because I teach Pilates and also a HIIT class, these are scheduled but I also walk when I feel like it, hula hoop or dance for the joy of it and cycle and swim. Can we talk about swimming?!  How did I not know how BRILLIANT sea swimming is! Especially in November!

Q.4 If exercise had ZERO impact on how your body looks, would your exercise choices be different?


Q.5 Why do you move?  (What motivates you and how does movement make you feel?)

I love how I feel when I move, and how I feel after.  Sometimes I might feel a bit stiff and cranky when I’m doing a class but afterwards I am so glad I have done it.

I say to my clients do what you love or what loves you back!  And that is my why for doing any movement.  Why else would you do it?!

Exercising with others is also a key part of it for me – I love riding off the energy of others. , Often dancing, swimming or doing HIIT classes with your mates or a good crowd can be THE BEST!!

Movement makes me feel confident in my self, alive and healthy and just plain GOOD.  I can’t imagine not moving!
